ΛIS Alumni participated in the National Model United Nations New York 2016

Hello our fellow ΛIS-ers, my name is Truong Quoc Viet, or Lucky. My brother Quoc Van (Mickey) and I both graduated from American International School in 2014 and 2015 respectively and we are now enjoying our university years. During the past week, we have had the opportunity to participate in the National Model United Nations New York 2016 (NMUN-NY). We were chosen to represent our university (Fairleigh Dickinson University – Vancouver Campus) for this important event.

And now we would like to share our valuable experience and insights with you as ΛIS graduates so that you can have a picture of what awaits you ahead.

NMUN is a university level simulation of the United Nations with over 2500 participants from all over the world. Like any other high school level Model United Nation (MUNs), at NMUN-NY, we had the chance to interact with many interesting, intelligent, and highly driven peers. These chosen participants are delegates from various countries around the world who took part in different committees and gathered to discuss important global issues.

Around the world, there are many different MUN conferences at the high school and university level; each with different set of rules based on the established UN protocols. As representatives of the Republic of Bulgaria, we had a chance to talk to the diplomats from the Bulgarian Permanent Missions, they represent Bulgaria at the real UN. This rare opportunity have strengthened our understanding of the represented country. The four day conference were stressful and tiring, but we have improved our skills on diplomacy, speech making, critical thinking, and research.

What makes attending this conference worthwhile is not just the skills I have attained or the friends I have made, but also a deeper understanding of where I stand as a member of the human race, trying and hoping to better the world.

On the last day, we sat in the United Nations Headquarter and listened to an inspiring speech made by the UN Deputy Secretary-General H.E. Jan Eliasson, whom have dealt with numerous “global disasters”. This speech encouraged us to look at diplomacy beyond its global sensibility and as a mean of self-betterment.

Eventually, our university won an award for Distinguish Delegates for our work on developing a resolution. From this prestigious event, I realized that the MUN classes and clubs I have participated in during my ΛIS days had helped me tremendously. I was familiar with all of the procedures and more importantly, had more confidence in working in a diplomatic environment. Now more than ever, I am thankful for the help I have received from my teachers and everyone at ΛIS for preparing me during my time there. Hence, I encourage you to join the ΛISMUN club or any other associations that will help you develop new skills and knowledge. Even if you don’t realize it, as ΛIS-ers, we all will soon step onto the world’s stage and the pursuit of greatness starts now!
