Step 2. Entrance Assessment (Grade 1-12)

The admissions assessment determines the student’s level of English comprehension and communication ability and whether the student’s personality and attitude are compatible with the philosophy of AISVN.

  • Parents schedule the assessment through the admissions office.
  • Applicants for Grades 1-12 will be assessed for English language proficiency in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.
  • The approximate duration of the assessment is:

Assessment Method

Approximate Duration

Grades 1-2

English Language Proficiency Test

Up to 90 minutes

Grades 3-12

English Language Proficiency Test

Up to 120 minutes

Step 3. Interview

Applicants in Grades KP-KG will be observed in a play-based interview with peers and the Early Years Program Administrative Team. For applicants in Grades 1-12, within 3-7 business days after the assessment and with the condition that the applicant has submitted all required documentation and meets the entrance level of the English Language Proficiency test, the admissions office will contact the parents and applicant to set up an interview with the school-level Principal.

Step 4. Review of Application

Each application is reviewed by the school-level Principal and the Director of Admissions & Communications, who, if necessary, will seek additional comments from the school-level admissions committee that may include, as appropriate, the Associate Director of EAL, School Counselor, College Counselor, IB Coordinator, or Learning Needs Specialist. All decisions are based on a careful review of the applicant's school records, English language proficiency and the school's ability to meet the student’s needs within its existing programs.

The School does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, political or other opinion, in its admissions practices. The School admits, according to available resources, students whose learning needs can be effectively supported by the School.

Step 5. Decisions

Within three business days after the interview date, the school will send a formal letter with the admissions decision to the applicant's family.

There are 3 possible decisions for every application.

A. Acceptance

If an applicant is qualified and there is space available, a formal letter of acceptance – Offer Letter is issued. If enrollment is offered, parents must sign the offer letter and send it back to the admissions office with a payment of the registration fee within seven business days (this fee is non-refundable and is not deductible from the tuition fee). After the seven-day period, the acceptance letter will expire, and the school may offer the applicant’s place to another student. All tuition payments must be cleared before the first day of classes.

B. Wait-List

AISVN has grown significantly over the years, but we remain committed to maintaining an intimate educational environment and limit the number of students at each grade level. When the number of eligible applicants exceeds the availability of spaces for a particular grade level, students may be placed in a wait pool until space becomes available. Students with siblings already enrolled at AISVN are given priority status within the wait pool, as are children of AISVN staff and alumni, as well as students returning to Vietnam who have previously attended AISVN. We consider various other criteria in selecting students from the waiting list, including whether the student has other viable educational options, his/her level of English and general academic proficiency.

When placing an applicant in a wait pool, we try to provide the candidate with a realistic assessment of the chances and possible timing for admittance. However, candidates should be aware that, like most international schools, the enrollment situation at AISVN is dynamic and often unpredictable. We periodically contact parents of applicants in the wait pool to update them on enrollment status and to confirm whether they wish to remain in the wait pool.

C. Denial

Applicants can be denied admissions on the basis of their academic or behavioral records, because their English language proficiency does not meet grade-level requirements, or AISVN lacks the resources to meet their specific educational needs, or other relevant factors such as EAL enrollment limitations.

If placement is not offered, the student is eligible to re-apply after 6 months and the application fee will apply at a discount of 50% within the 6-month period. After 6 months, the applicant must begin the entire application process again and pay the full application fee.

Step 6. Confirm Enrollment

Students who have been accepted will need to sign the Offer Letter, submit all the required documents and complete the payment.

Failure to submit any of the required documents within 45 days from the offer letter issuance date will result in the revocation of acceptance. (Please refer to the "Admissions & Enrollment Checklist").
Failure to submit any required fees in accordance with the fee schedule will result in the revocation of acceptance.

If the school year begins within the 45-day period allowed for the submission of required documentation, a student may begin classes if all fees are paid, but must submit the required documentation within this time frame. Failure to submit required documentation within 45 days may result in the student’s being prohibited from attending classes and school functions.
