*Khám Phá programme is our Early Years Programme in which our youngest learners (3 & 4 year olds) are inspired to learn through a model of play and inquiry in a challenging and engaging environment.

Our January 1st cutoff date and grade placement protocol reflects what we believe to be the most appropriate classification for the social, emotional and academic wellbeing of children attending the school. At the discretion of the Principal, exceptions may be made if a student is already established in an equivalent class at another school system and is able to access the relevant AISVN curriculum for the grade.

Applicants transferring from school systems that do not operate on January to December age level entry requirements may be required to repeat part of a given grade level. When considering a waiver of this requirement the school will consider a variety of factors, including the student’s age and social maturity, academic performance, and level of English Language Proficiency.

Elementary & Secondary School Specific Entry Requirements

Elementary School - Admissions to the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)
A thorough review of the applicant’s application form and required documentation is carried out to determine if the school wishes to interview the applicant.

Khám Phá & Kindergarten (3-6 year olds)
Applicants for Khám Phá and Kindergarten are invited to attend a playdate/interview. At the playdate/interview applicants are invited to a playroom where Admissions Specialists observe and interact with the applicants in a safe and fun environment. The applicant may be with peers or alone. Applicants are encouraged to play and communicate with the adults in their home language or English. The playdate determines the readiness of each applicant to join our programme. In addition, families are requested to complete a parent questionnaire and attend an interview with the school Principal (if needed).

Grades 1-5
A thorough review of the applicant’s application form and required documentation is carried out to determine if the school wishes to interview the applicant. The applicant's complete profile and documentation is reviewed by the Admissions Manager, the Director of Admissions & Communications and the school Principal. In certain cases, a further review of the applicant's eligibility may be carried out by the Deans of Students, Counsellors, Learning Support Teachers and/or Curriculum/EAL Coordinators. A decision is then made to invite the applicant to interview. For students with a home language other than English, the English Language Proficiency assessment must be carried out prior to interview.
Secondary School - Admissions to the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) & IB Diploma Programme (DP)
Grades 6-12
All students applying to AISVN must provide school records for the prior three academic years. An official school transcript (if available) must also be submitted for applicants to Grade 10 and above. A thorough review of the applicant’s application form and required documentation is carried out to determine if the school wishes to interview the applicant. Specific Requirements for Admissions to the IB Diploma Programme (DP)
Grades 11-12
At Grades 11-12 AISVN offers a challenging pre-university academic programme geared toward students who are planning to go to college or university in North America, Australia, Europe and other areas of the world. All students applying to AISVN must provide school records for the prior three academic years. An official school transcript (if available) must also be submitted.

As the IB Diploma is a two-year course, applicants for Grade 11 are admitted only at the beginning of Grade 11. Applicants may not be admitted after the first week of Quarter 1, unless they are transferring from an IB school that offers the same subjects.

Applicants applying for Grade 12 may be considered if transferring from an existing IB Diploma Programme. Applicants applying for Grade 12 entry from a non IB Diploma curriculum may be considered, however this would be on the understanding that the student would not be able to successfully complete the IB Diploma Programme and would instead be solely eligible for the AISVN Diploma.
ADMISSIONS FOR ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE (EAL)* APPLICANTS
*English as an Additional Language applicants refers to students that have a home language other than English.

AISVN does not have separate classes for EAL support. EAL support is provided through a collaborative immersion co-teaching model in which EAL specialist teachers co-plan and co-teach with homeroom and content teachers.

Khám Phá and Kindergarten
There are no specific English language requirements for applicants in this age range. Ability to speak some basic English is an advantage but not a requirement.

Grades 1-10
Applicants for Grades 1 through 10 will sit the WIDA English Language Proficiency Assessment of academic language. The assessment provides opportunities for applicants to demonstrate their proficiency in four language domains: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Each of the four language domains is assessed in a separate domain test. All four domain tests are delivered between a Test Administrator and the applicant. The tests are individually administered in our Admissions Office.

Results of this assessment:
I.The applicant does not meet the minimum English Language Proficiency level requirement to enter AISVN. (Applicants will be advised and encouraged to be re-assessed in 6 months time).
II.The applicant meets the minimum English Language Proficiency level requirement but will need additional EAL support (EAL support requires an additional fee per year).
III.The applicant’s level of English Language Proficiency is good and therefore no ‘fee paying” EAL support is needed.

Grades 11-12
Non-native English speaking applicants will be required to sit an English Language Proficiency Assessment of academic language. EAL support is not offered in Grades 11 and 12 as applicants for Grades 11-12 must have a fairly high degree of competency in English.
Admissions for applicants that have learning support requirements
Applicants presenting with mild and moderate Learning Support Requirements are considered for admission on a case by case basis with the ultimate goal of ensuring that the applicant will be able to be successful and happy at AISVN. After careful review of the applicant’s profile, documentation, family interview and consultation with the school’s Learning Support team, AISVN will determine if the applicant’s inclusive access requirements can be accommodated.

Please note that any learning support requirements (social/emotional/learning/behavioural) must be described in detail in the application for admission. Reports from external agencies/professionals outside of the school setting, along with details of extra support the applicant is receiving in their current/former school, should also be provided at the time of application. Failure to fully disclose such information at this time may result in cancellation of admission.

Should learning support requirements (social/emotional/learning/behavioural) become apparent following enrollment in the school, we will consult with parents and strive to support the student within the extent of our Student Support resources and capabilities. However, we reserve the right to review a student’s progress and determine the appropriateness of his/her continued enrollment in the school. If we determine that we are unable to accommodate a student’s learning support requirements, we will endeavor to encourage parents to work with external agencies to whom we refer students for further assessment and/or direct parents to more suitable options.
